Day 7

Well day 7 was quite eventful. The rain, sorry, torrential rain started about 1.30am and went on all night. When we finally got up around 7am, the electrics in the caravan went so we were in danger of no tea or porridge to start the day – disaster!! Electrics sorted we ventured on our way in the pouring rain. 5 minutes and we were back in England in Cumbria. Pretty much soaked after about 10 minutes so it was head down and just get on with it. Horrible conditions, feet and legs cold and wet, our first stop was after 27 miles. After that we were on quieter roads but that had its own dangers, flooding. So much rain had fallen the water was pouring off fields and onto the roads and was accumulating in dips in the road. We had to negotiate about 5 of these, some of which were so deep that our feet were immersed in water as we turned the pedals; are we sure this is May ??? Stopped at Greystoke for a quick bite to eat where we sheltered under a pub sunshade! We then headed for the lakes…lovely downhill and Ullswater appeared in front of us in the mist. Followed this lake for a while and then went up Kirkstone Pass, 20% gradient and quite possibly one of the hardest hills we’ve done at 1481 feet. We then descended down to Lake Windermere and headed for the campsite and a nice hot shower….and of course the rain then finally stopped…….
